This project will support the provision of free English classes to people on the move living in Katsikas refugee camp in Greece, from pre-literate to advanced level language learners. English is a vital survival skill needed for life in Greece, in addition to opening up opportunities for future work and study.
People on the move living in Katsikas refugee camp in Greece need English language skills to survive - not only in their current situation in Greece, but also for moving on to other European countries where English is used as a lingua franca for cross-cultural communication. English lessons at Habibi.Works aim to provide students with the language skills to facilitate this communication.
The Habibi.Works English project provides free language classes to people on the move in Katsikas refugee camp. Classes range from pre-literate level teaching letters of the alphabet and useful everyday phrases, to advanced classes preparing for official B1/B2 level certifications that can open up future opportunities for work and study.
Individuals participating in our space have attested to feelings of self-empowerment, increased self-confidence, more balanced mental health, and optimism about their future. Individual agency and creativity have a safe space to thrive. Integration into Greek society is facilitated through positive social encounters and empowered individuals. Habibi.Works provides counternarratives to the limiting view on refugees and asylum-seekers, celebrating the resilience and potential of individuals.
